Freedom

July 1, 2008 / by solanikola

There is something about parades that get me all choked up.  Last year,  I had streams of tears roll down my face during the 4th of July parade nestled in the mountains near Breckenridge, CO.  My twin sister looked over at me while I wiped away the tears.  She laughed and commented that she experiences the same thing and can't figure out why.  I love to feel that kind of emotion so needless to say,  I'm going back to the same parade on Friday!

I've recently been filled with intense gratitude for the country that we live in.  As much as Americans have a well-deserved reputation for being glutonous and ignorant,  every 4th of July,  my patriotic fire burns bright again.

Parades are an excellent venue for people watching (one of my favorite past times).  My favorite people to watch are the veterans.  They march with dignity, honor and purpose.  The beauty queen-adorned convertibles, twirling acrobatics, cheerleading squads, giant puppets, candy throwing clowns, etc. are all there to honor and celebrate the veterans although many of them may not realize it.  Watching the fireworks and hearing the national anthen play gives me the goose bumps and teary eyes too.  I'm so glad that we take time to honor what freedom means in our country even though it takes a yearly holiday to remind us!

Wishing everyone an AWESOME 4th of July!
